Oil exploration in Trinidad

Oil exploration in Trinidad has been ongoing for over 100 years, and the country is the largest oil and natural gas producer in the Caribbean.

The first oil well in Trinidad was drilled in 1857 by the Merrimac Company. The first successful oil well was drilled in 1866 by Walter Darwent at Aripero. Commercial oil production only started in 1908.

Oil production has declined since its peak in the late 1970s  and the country’s hydrocarbon sector has shifted from oil-dominant to natural gas. Liquefied natural gas is a major export commodity thanks to large natural gas reserves which are located off the coasts of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (https://thegstt.org/) seems to be a very active society that has a long history of supporting geology in the country. They run a variety of events and conferences and on their website, they have an interactive map of geological attractions in the country.
